Summary

A mindbending, relentlessly surprising thriller from the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy。

"Are you happy with your life?"

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious。

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits。

Before a man Jason's never met smiles down at him and says, "Welcome back, my friend。"

In this world he's woken up to, Jason's life is not the one he knows。 His wife is not his wife。 His son was never born。 And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable。 Something impossible。

Is it this world or the other that's the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could've imagined--one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe。

Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human--a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we'll go to claim the lives we dream of。

The story was great, made me turn the pages quicker the closer I got to the end。

Science fiction is not really my jam so I only picked this up on a friend's recommendation and because I wanted to 'push myself out of my comfort zone'。 As things go, this is a masala science-fiction of sorts where the 'science' isn't overpowering the rest of the story。 Dark Matter set in a plausible and interesting premise grounded in the world of today - an everyday college professor, who leads a quiet if unambitious life, is suddenly thrust into a situation where he is forced to explore how l Science fiction is not really my jam so I only picked this up on a friend's recommendation and because I wanted to 'push myself out of my comfort zone'。 As things go, this is a masala science-fiction of sorts where the 'science' isn't overpowering the rest of the story。 Dark Matter set in a plausible and interesting premise grounded in the world of today - an everyday college professor, who leads a quiet if unambitious life, is suddenly thrust into a situation where he is forced to explore how life could have turned out had some choices been made differently。 The set-up was really rapid and drew me in。 Of course, we all imagine and dream of the 'what if's' in our lives, so it is immensely relatable too。 Would the people be different, would the relationships with our loved ones be different, what does one need to give up to gain something else? As a concept - it's fascinating。In execution though, I actually gave up on trying to follow on the logic of this, I lost the thread on the whole metaverse funda and travel to multiple-universes concept。 It felt liek we were getting into 'if you can't convince them, confuse them' territory a bit (or I was too lazy to pour over and work this out at the least), but it's not jarringly confusing so I just played along for the story。 And once you accept how things work, except for one major twist at the end it's largely played by the rules。I actually didn't mind the final third (which seems to have rankled some folks) and how it was wrapped up despite the Inception inspired Nolan-esque 'love is the only thing that matters' philosophy。 There were some excellent twists and turns with an action-packed denoument - a Hollywood movie or Netflix series will definitely be coming our way soon。 。。。more

I don’t finished a book in 24 hours。 I don’t read this much in 24 hours, this book absolutely floored me and blew my mind。Blake Crouch has my attention and my curiosity, and is now in my list of authors I will buy no matter what。

my first book I’ve read in the sci fi genre!! I thought this was really good and entertaining! I enjoyed that it had a romance element as well。 the underlining point of the story was very sweet and heartwarming! I think if I read this at a different time it could have been a 5 star but it was still a great read!

This book, as well as his other novel Recursion are top tier science fiction books。 I am very impressed by the mechanics of the world developed by Blake Crouch。 He does a great job extending science into fiction, almost seamlessly。 The technology he invents feels like it could really exist in our world。

Empieza un poco lento pero se vuelve frenético。 Imposible dejar de leer cuando empieza la parte interesante。

Concept of multiverse converted to a Hollywood movie。 Hero loses his life。 Travels through multiverse and tries to find it again。 With the usual romance & family love themes。 A weekend read if you feel like reading some masala。

This is a good book, but I dont recommend it for a fellow physicist。 There are some questionable assertions and a significant amount of ignoring some basic logic necessary for this story to work。 If you can get passed it though it is a good thriller and does bring up some interesting ideas。

This story is like a fucked up, sci-fi version of groundhog’s day。 I’m joking…a little bit。 This highly entertaining book is like if Groundhog’s Day and the show Palm Springs had a baby with a scientist who was obsessed with the multiverse。 It’s cool。 Just read it。

Truly a wild ride。 Such a unique and thought provoking plot。 I really enjoyed it。

I enjoyed the potential or what could have been of the story way more than the experience of reading it。

I don’t even know where to begin。 I loved it so much until about 70% in。 No spoilers of course but I felt as if there is a major plot hole that I, as a major sci-fi fan, can’t get over lol。 I would love to chat with someone who read the book to ask what on earth happened with the plot twist but after much research online all of the reviews leave me still scratching my head。 I don’t know that I would make the recommendation to read this book because I think the plot hole is too big if you are a t I don’t even know where to begin。 I loved it so much until about 70% in。 No spoilers of course but I felt as if there is a major plot hole that I, as a major sci-fi fan, can’t get over lol。 I would love to chat with someone who read the book to ask what on earth happened with the plot twist but after much research online all of the reviews leave me still scratching my head。 I don’t know that I would make the recommendation to read this book because I think the plot hole is too big if you are a true sci-fi person lol!! Interesting, unique story for when it was published… but not a top read for me, because:1) there were several large plot holes that were a big distraction through the second half of the story。 2) the women characters were one dimensional people who existed only for the purposes of supporting the main character。 It might have been interesting to tell the story from both the perspectives of Jason and Amanda and to give her a real backstory and character arc。3) I may have enjoyed this book more if Interesting, unique story for when it was published… but not a top read for me, because:1) there were several large plot holes that were a big distraction through the second half of the story。 2) the women characters were one dimensional people who existed only for the purposes of supporting the main character。 It might have been interesting to tell the story from both the perspectives of Jason and Amanda and to give her a real backstory and character arc。3) I may have enjoyed this book more if I had read it when it first came out, but there is so much metaverse-based media around these days that it isn’t as unique or compelling as it probably was when it first launched 。。。more

This book really f*cked me up。 How dare Blake Crouch just do that?????????????????????? So good, so well paced, so thought provoking。 Just enough universe switches (looking at you Matt Haig)。 Perfect thrilling weekend read, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with this unsettling narrative in my head for the rest of my life。 Help。

Trippy, mind-boggling story that really makes you think…feel like I need to ponder everything that unfolded for the next year! Original plot and kept me guessing even after it was over!

3。5 stars。 Like always, Crouch easily spun a tale that was engrossing, quick in tempo and easy to digest。 This would have been a 4 star read for me, however, I felt certain plot points were simply skimmed over when they really needed to be given more attention and expanded upon further。 Had this been done I would have felt greater investment in the story。
